Dale Earnhardt was and in many ways, still is, NASCAR.

The Intimidator, The Man in Black, Ironhead, Big E, by any name, was larger than the sport he competed in, a feat very few accomplish.

From his 1979 rookie season, through his 7 NASCAR cup championships, to his unfortunate passing on the last lap of the 2001 Daytona 500, Dale was as big as any NASCAR driver has ever been or likely will be.

You didn’t have to tune in on Sundays to know what that #3 represented then, and for many it still resonates today.

Iconic is the word.

You see a #3, you see a NASCAR reference, and one can’t help but think, Dale Earnhardt.

Like with most legends, we know the career highlights, we know the feats, the highs and the lows, but there’s always more to find out.

Thus, few things mix as well as sporting legends and documentaries, and Prime Video has combined the racing hero and the big screen in a 4 part docuseries releasing today, May 22nd.

The first two episodes are available now on Prime Video, with the final two arriving a week later on May 29th.

All this coincides and sandwiches the first ever NASCAR Cup series race on Prime Video, the 2025 Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway which takes place on May 25th.

The series is coming from Academy-Award Winning Executive producers, Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Dan Lindsay with TJ Martin and is directed by Joshua Altman.

The synopsis reads:

““Earnhardt” will dive into the rich history of Dale Earnhardt, one of the sport’s most influential figures to ever compete at NASCAR’s highest level. Through rare archival footage, thrilling races and emotional interviews from his children, colleagues and closest friends, the docuseries will depict Dale Earnhardt’s rise to NASCAR stardom and nationwide fame. Earnhardt’s navigation of family dynamics — including that of his son, Dale Earnhardt. Jr. — will also be explored.”

In anticipation of today’s release, we had the opportunity to speak with Joshua Altman, the director of "Earnhardt".

Hear what Altman had to say on The Burnside Beat this morning here on ESPN 97.7 in regards to all the effort and care put into the feature:

If the interview is any indication for us, it's that this is a high quality product that will give fans a better understanding of the "man in black" as a racer, a father, and as a sports legend.

Fans of Dale, fans of NASCAR, just fans of sports in general aren't going to want to miss this one.
