What's with these scam text messages that are constantly being sent?

I've stopped opening half of them. I get a hundred calls a day too from robocallers and a couple texts a week. They're all fairly transparently scams, but some of them are pretty good.

There's an EZ Pass Violation text that's been going around that looks like this:

"Dear Customer, we regret to inform you that your vehicle has passed through an E-ZPass lane without payment of the toll. Please click on the following link to settle your payment..."

It's not a bad scam because I'm sure 5% of people click the link and these pirates get a little cash off of it. And I'm sure it works better when it's local and it has local references. Sometimes I get texts about doing something illegal in New Hampshire or something and it's not even close.

Here's some of the comments:

"Got one the other day from VDOT, haven't been to Vermont ever and Virginia in 10 years. A reminder that the Utah legislature has outlawed automatic traffic enforcement of any kind and reminders like this are not sent through text."

Yes, that's what I've gotten. And he makes a good point that they wouldn't send these messages through text.

"If you get an unsolicited text asking you to click on a link, it is a scam. Full stop.

The only time you'll get a link in a text is if you signed up for something, or made some sort of action with a company that resulted in getting a text back."

Yep. Watch out for the phony texts. Don't get scammed!
