If you are traveling in the Dixie National Forest near the Duck Creek area, be aware that the Forest Service will be doing prescribed fires. When conditions are right, they will perform the burns.

Here is the information from the press release:

Planned Prescribed Burn Details for April 9th

On Thursday, April 9th, Dixie National Forest Fuels and Fire managers plan to conduct prescribed burning operations on the Cedar City Ranger District beginning at 10 a.m. Crews expect to burn about 360 acres northeast of Duck Creek and north of SR-14 in the Assay Knolls area, about 28 miles east of Cedar City, Utah. Hand and aerial ignition will be used during burn operations.

Smoke will be visible during ignitions and for several days afterwards.

Benefits of Prescribed Fires for Forest Health and Wildlife

Making this information available to the public keeps people informed when they see smoke in the forest. These prescribed fires improve the health of the forest and the habitat for wildlife.

It helps regenerate different vegetation that gets chocked out by overcrowding. It clears out old pine needles and other dead and overgrown vegetation making it possible for new growth to thrive.

It also helps to keep uncontrolled burns happening later in the year when conditions will cause massive wildfires. Fire is important to a forest ecosystem and doing a prescribed burn in the spring can get the benefits without it getting out of control.

There will be more prescribed fires throughout the year when conditions are right and you can visit the Forest Service website for information.
