Ed Sheeran’s Tough Bleeding Performance Mirrors Utah’s Resilient Spirit
Some of the toughest people I know are from Utah, including the many mothers who have suffered through childbirth—Utah is in the top ten states for children. This toughness quotient has me wondering if Ed Sheeran is not a Utahn himself.
In concert, Ed Sheeran showed the audience that he had cut his hand. Instead of canceling the concert or even leaving the stage, he continued performing.
When Ed Sheeran kept singing with a bleeding hand as medics wrapped it mid-song, he embodied the same resilient, never-quit attitude that echoes through Utah's history and people. Whether it's pioneers who carved out a new life in the desert, outdoor adventurers scaling rocky cliffs, or Utah’s hardworking ranchers and farmers, pushing through adversity is woven into the state’s identity.
In this age of performer safety and show cancellations, it was pretty impressive to see Sheeran continue singing while his hand was being bandaged, and then pick up strumming the guitar as soon as he was ready, without any hesitation or reassurance that he could use his hand again. I know every state has its heroes, but I’m just saying that if Ed Sheeran finds himself in Utah, he will be in good company among our pioneer stock.

In Utah, we don’t back down when things get tough. From extreme weather to rugged landscapes, Utahns rise to challenges with determination, much like Ed powering through his injury. It’s about showing up, giving your all, and not letting anything—whether it's a bleeding hand or a storm in the mountains—stop you from doing what you set out to accomplish.
