A new inventive exhibit at Hogle Zoo will focus on our local wildlife.

Years ago, we were in the Pocatello, Idaho area and we read that there was a zoo nearby. We needed entertainment so we followed the directions. To our surprise the area offered two zoos, one was the typical zoo with all of the exotic animals and the other featured animals native to the area.

The local animal zoo was closed so we went to the normal zoo, but I was always curious what the native animal zoo might have looked like. I mean, they could do a much better job making enclosures that looked like where you would naturally see the animal. And the animals might be more likely to come out since they would feel at home.

Hogle zoo has announced that they are introducing a new feature, "Wonders of Our Backyard". It will feature our amazing local wildlife and will have hands-on activities. You can paint houses for our bats, birds and bee population, explore a campsite display and make food at an animal-care kitchen.

This will be very helpful in teaching us how to identify and co-exist with the animals that live near us.

I wonder if they will include some of the other animals we see around Utah. You know like the native speed demon pass you on the right driver or the exotic shake your hand until your arm pops out of its socket overeager greeter. How about the Costco forager with a cart full enough to supply a platoon of the Utah National Guard?

There are so many choices I'm sure Hogle zoo was careful to find the most exciting of the Utah bunch.
