Secrets Coming Out Whether You Test or Not

DNA testing has become a popular way to find out about your ancestors and connect to relatives you didn’t know you had. There are many companies offering DNA kits that are simple to use and can show you things like what countries and ethnicities are in your line.

It can also create some pain, awkwardness, and family drama if there is a family secret somewhere in your past. The internet has hundreds of stories of people who discovered the truth about their parents and grandparents that might have been better left alone.

The Stories of DNA Mishaps

This page of personal stories on reddit shows many such accounts. One guy was trying to get proof of his Native American heritage to get benefits from the government and instead led his four children he fathered from different women to find him.

Another woman found her grandmother had fathered her dad through an affair with the family doctor. Not the memory you want of your dear grandma. There are many stories like this that are funny and some tragic.

What Should You Do if You Have a Secret?

So, if you are hiding something from your family that doesn’t show in the current paperwork, should you avoid getting a DNA test? You can, but it doesn’t guarantee the secret will be safe. That is because children, siblings, even cousins who get tested can reveal the truth.

As in the example above, the grandchild was tested and revealed what happened with the grandmother. The power of DNA to map who is related to who will bring out the truth.
