In trying to keep our homes clean, sometimes we are actually making it worse. We can actually damage the carpet and tile in our desire to keep it clean.

Easy Ways To Keep Your Flooring Pristine

Five tips to keep your house cleaner and also not accidentally shorten the life of your flooring.  I talked with James Burk from Stanley Steemer who has been cleaning carpets and tile for 23 years.

First Tip: Stop thinking you don’t have to clean your carpets until they get really dirty, and the need is obvious. That dirt and grime will shorten the life of the carpet and wear it down. A regular cleaning, at least once or twice a year, can make a big difference.

Second Tip: Whatever you put on the carpet has to be removed. “If you put cleaner on you got to figure out a way to suck the cleaner off,” said Burk. You may do some spot cleaning, but if you that cleaner has to come back out so it doesn’t increase the problem over time.

Third Tip:  Don’t let your pets pee on the carpet. There is not a magic spray that will keep them from doing their business on your rug. You have to train them to go outside.

Fourth tip: Spray cleaner on the tile and use a flat mop to wipe it off. If you mop your tile, the dirty water is going to go to the lowest point which is your grout. This is why your grout gets so dirty.

Fifth Tip: Get a professional to clean your air ducts. “There’s a misconception that dirt magically appears in the air ducts,” said Burk. “The dirt on your countertops makes its way to the ducts.” Getting that dust out of the air vents will keep it from circulating.
