Make Your Yard Part of the Solution With This Innovative Program to Save Pollinators
How would you like to live in a national park? You could be in a place that is reserved in its natural state and where animals and bugs run wild and are undisturbed. What if you turned the place you live currently into a place where plants and animals can thrive?
How the State of Utah is Helping Pollinators
The insect population around the world is in trouble. It is called the insect apocalypse, and it refers to the possibility that 40% of the insects on earth could disappear. If this happens, it will affect all other life on this planet including us humans.
One thing insects do is pollinate plants. Recognizing the impact of losing these key pollinators, the State of Utah came up with a plan to encourage citizens to help. It is called the Utah Pollinator Habitat Program.
Basically, it reimburses residents for planting bushes, trees, and flowers that pollinating insects are looking for. If we can make the places, we live more attractive to these important bugs, it can benefit everyone and everything that lives in it.
How You Can Be Part of the Pollinator Solution
This past year the state changed from reimbursing homeowners for 25% of foliage that helps pollinators to covering 75% of the cost. You can find the application process on the website if you are interested.
You can also find out what plants are best for bugs here in Utah. There is all kinds of information on this site.
In the past we have tried to preserve space in nature in the form of state parks and national parks, but it has become apparent this is not enough. The idea is to create more habitat on private land that will make a place where bugs and birds can thrive.
