Here’s How the New Law Restricting Alcohol Sales in Utah Will Work in 2026
Starting in 2026 all establishments who sell alcohol in Utah will be required to check ID no matter the age of the person. They will be looking for more than just to see if you are old enough to purchase it.
Court Ordered Alcohol Restrictions Noted on Licenses
For those who have been convicted of driving under the influence, a court can require they get a new ID that says "No Alcohol Sale" on it. People can also opt in for the ID if they have struggled with alcohol in the past.
The law H.B 437 goes into effect starting in 2026. With this new law, all businesses that sell alcohol must check every person's ID every time before making the sale. It doesn't matter how old the person is or how often they visit the establishment.
If the person shows an interdicted ID, that is what it is called in the new law, they will not be able to purchase the alcohol. These new IDs are distributed and go into effect this year.
Identification Required to Buy Alcohol in Utah
You can use a driver's license, military ID, or a passport to purchase alcohol. A passport will not be marked "No Alcohol Sale". I would imagine this remains a acceptable form of ID for people visiting from other countries.
