What is this new delicacy that Ansu has offered to Succubus? It might be more than just food, but the power of an idea. Find out more in Dave's book. He has written a 3 book fantasy series called “The Demon Curse” that discusses a different sort of power in the underworld. This riveting series is full of insights that ring true to life. Truly an enjoyable read.

Now Dave may not know that I am posting a portion of the book per week so you can read it for FREE! I post an installment once a week. Here is the sixteenth installment of The Demon Curse Series Book #1 entitled “Son of Ruin” written by David E. Hiatt.

Chapter 3 Establishing Order Installment 16

After that, the hierarchy of the small group was established. Ghamegis and Ipses readily acknowledged Succubus as the leader, of course, with themselves next in line.

Though he had no desire for their company, after this confrontation they fashioned themselves as his lieutenants. They would follow him around, glaring at the other demons that dared look their way.

Over the next year, the routine was much the same. Food would be brought, and Succubus would wait to roast his roots by himself after Bune had left. As he and the others explored the back caverns, he found better sites for cooking.

Although Ghamegis and Ipses did their best to boss the smaller demons around, Succubus kept an even hand, treating weak and strong alike. When they played games in the caverns, Succubus was far superior with his larger build and greater dexterity, and could win easily, but he often tipped the victory to the weaker groups just to frustrate his self-styled lieutenants.

Ghamegis and Ipses complained vigorously, which made Succubus smile all the more.

At times, Ansu would deliver the day's roots, often staying and watching the group structure from the side of the cavern. He seemed curious about the way Succubus ruled his little band. At first it made Succubus uncomfortable, but the old demon didn’t seem out to harm him, in fact, it appeared he kind of liked him. This was a strange thing for the demon world where every individual only looked out for their own interests.

One day, Ansu arrived and spilled the bag of roots on the ground. He stepped forward as Succubus approached.

“I’ve brought you something special today,” he said.

Succubus looked at the hunched over demon who smiled knowingly down at him. “What is it?” he asked.

“It’s a mushroom,” said Ansu, who held a soft, brown lump as big as his fist. “These are reserved for the rulers.”

Taking the new food item, Succubus began to raise it to his mouth.

Shaking his head, Ansu stopped him. “Needs fire,” said the old demon.

Succubus nodded. When he took his roots back to his roasting spot, he placed the mushroom with the plump roots. The result was amazing. The mushroom added a delicious flavor to the cooked root.

From then on, whenever Ansu brought the food, he gave a mushroom or two to Succubus.

There you have it. The sixteenth piece of the book. Let me know if you enjoyed this, want more, or anything else I can do to make it easier to read.
