Many of Utah’s upland game bird and waterfowl seasons are already underway, with the general-season pheasant and quail hunts opening Saturday, Nov. 1. According to a press release from the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR), hunters can expect both challenges and opportunities this fall as they pursue these popular game birds across the state.

Utah’s general pheasant season runs through Dec. 7, with pen-reared pheasants released weekly on various Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) and Walk-in Access properties. “We release pen-reared pheasants on various wildlife management areas and Walk-in Access properties around the state each week during the general-season hunt to provide additional opportunities for hunters,” DWR Upland Game Coordinator Heather Talley said in a press release. She added that hunters can improve their odds by venturing away from crowded areas and checking the DWR website for release sites and schedules.

Dry Conditions Causing Pheasant Population Decrease

Hunters are urged to use safe practices while biologists are releasing birds, and to note that nontoxic shot is required on several WMAs. While some areas report stable pheasant numbers, overall populations have declined due to dry conditions. Pheasants favor areas near crops and thick vegetation and are more easily flushed with a trained dog, though patient walking can also yield success.

Utah’s quail season runs from Nov. 1 to Dec. 31. The southeastern and northeastern regions saw moderate brood production, but overall numbers are down. Gambel’s quail prefer desert washes and brushy foothills, while California quail are often found near water and dense cover. “It’s best to hunt quail with a trained hunting dog, since quail would rather hunker down and hide than fly away,” Talley said. Hunters must also secure permission to hunt on private land where much of the habitat is found.

Youth and beginner hunts for pheasant and quail will take place in late October and early November, with several free events statewide, including one in Cedar City on Nov. 1 at C-A-L Ranch. Hunters can also take part in the Upland Game Slam, which raises funds for habitat projects while offering collectible rewards for completing specific challenges.
