SUU Falls Short In Face-Off Against Abilene Christian: A Game Recap

In their final home stretch of the season, Southern Utah University (SUU) hosted the Abilene Christian Wildcats but fell short with a 77-68 defeat at the America First Event Center.

Head Coach Rob Jeter expressed disappointment, highlighting the team's resilience throughout the season but also noting a sense of surrender during this particular game.

The first half witnessed a competitive exchange, concluding with the Wildcats securing a six-point lead, punctuated by a buzzer-beating triple, deflating the AFEC atmosphere.

The second half proved to be an uphill struggle for the Thunderbirds, as Abilene Christian widened their lead to 13 points, maintaining control until the final whistle.

Injuries hampered SUU's performance, with key players Jamari Sibley and Chazz Hutchison sidelined for the game.

Despite the loss, SUU saw four players reaching double digits in scoring, with Zion Young leading at 19 points, despite missing significant minutes due to an eye injury. Braden Housley, Parsa Fallah, and Dominique Ford each contributed 10 points.

Prophet Johnson stood out in rebounding, securing five rebounds in just 18 minutes of play. However, SUU struggled on the boards, being outrebounded by 17, mainly attributed to the absence of Sibley and Hutchison.

In terms of shooting, SUU managed a respectable 46% from the field compared to Abilene Christian's 52%. Notably, Abilene Christian, known for their modest three-point shooting, defied expectations by sinking seven of their 10 attempts beyond the arc.

Looking ahead, SUU will face Tarleton St in their final home game of the season on March 2, aiming to bounce back from the recent defeat. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., marking the end of an eventful season at the America First Event Center.
