Utah: It’s Time To Get Real
With the federal enforcement deadline for REAL ID quickly approaching on May 7, 2025, many Americans are rushing to update their identification. But for most Utahns, there's little cause for concern—more than 95% of the state's residents are already compliant.
The REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, was created to enhance security measures following the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Starting this May, travelers will need a REAL ID-compliant license or ID card to board domestic flights or enter certain federal facilities. Standard state-issued IDs without the proper credentials will no longer be accepted for these purposes.
Utah Is Already 95.5% Compliant
Fortunately, Utah has been ahead of the curve. The state began issuing REAL ID-compliant credentials early on, and its proactive approach has resulted in one of the highest compliance rates in the country. If you’re not sure whether your license is compliant, look for a gold star in the upper right-hand corner of your card. If it’s there, you’re good to go.
However, if your driver license or ID doesn’t have the gold star, now’s the time to act. To obtain a REAL ID, you’ll need to provide documents such as proof of identity, your Social Security number, and Utah residency.
If you need to travel but won’t have a REAL ID by your departure date, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) offers a list of acceptable alternative documents at checkpoints.
You Can Still Drive Without The Star
It’s important to note that the REAL ID requirement does not affect your ability to drive. Even after May 7, non-compliant licenses are still valid for operating a vehicle. REAL ID is for federal travel and building access.

With most Utahns already REAL ID-ready, the state stands as a model of preparedness. Still, officials encourage everyone to double-check their credentials and avoid last-minute surprises.
